Favourite Racehorses of all time
To decide which the favourite race horses of all time were is a difficult and possibly contentious task; certainly it is a moving target. But we will start with the horse than many consider to have been the best thoroughbred flat racers of all time, and that is Sea the Stars. Although the horse had a brief career on the racecourse, and is (we hope) enjoying a long career in stud, he won everything he entered including the 2,000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby, the Eclipse Stakes, the International Stakes, the Irish Champion Stakes, and his final achievement ,the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Of course one of everybody’s favourites was Red Rum. This steeplechaser won the Aintree Grand National three times, in 1973, 1974 and 1977. In 1975 and 1976 he came in second. In his final victory he was at one time 30 lengths behind, and it was a remarkable and courageous achievement to come back so strongly. Many claim that this was the greatest Grand national run ever. Such courage was rewarded by a huge following, and even after he was retired, he made frequent public appearances. His remains are buried by the finishing post at the Aintree race course.
Arkle was another horse with which the public fell in love. The horse was very gifted ands achieved the highest rating of any steeplechaser. Ridden by the great Pat Taaffe, the horse won the Cheltenham Gold Cup on three consecutive occasions from 1964 until 1966. He also won the Hennessy Gold Cup, the Irish Grand National and the King George VI Chase. Unfortunately his career was cut short by injury.
Other all time favourites we must include are Desert Orchid and Best Mate, both outstanding horses that had a huge public following.
